The history of the United States resides within our collective memory through stories. For most of us, the version of history we learn offers narratives consistently written by white people, centering white heroes.

We find this unacceptable.

There are a multitude of stories that disrupt whitewashed narratives and Sankofa Impact intentionally chooses to center the Black American freedom struggle. Our choice to focus on Black history is a strategic one that holds ourselves accountable to a set of stories that we believe are central in achieving collective liberation.

Our place-based learning approach creates collective historical memory, especially through the lens of the Black American freedom struggle. It takes all of us. We welcome all people in the timeless fight for justice.

We must all fight to reclaim history.

Sankofa Impact remains committed to offering the unvarnished truth about U.S. history to our program participants. Through community and bold action, there is nothing we cannot achieve. The late Maya Angelou said, “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.”
